  Our Philosophy

In 1996, I wrote this on a resume under Philosophy of Bodywork:

"Explore the many levels of soft-tissue therapy to discover the balance of body contraction, expansion, and release. Integrate deep fascial stretching and active isolated flexibility. Educate."

Twelve years later, I have made that philosophy the cornerstone of my practice and my teaching.

Some believe that yoga can be "contextualized" to address specific "problem areas," such as tight hips, upper-body strength, a flabby midsection, or core weakness. I must state right here that I am not of that ilk. Yoga is macrocosm, not microcosm.

Among the joys of my experiences teaching yoga one stands out. It is the students' own amazement with themselves.

I find it nearly unbelievable how many times I've heard, "I can't do yoga, I'm not flexible!" In my global perspective, that statement puts the proverbial cart before the horse. Most potential students of yoga don't come to the practice already flexible; they want to BECOME flexible. Most can't imagine the challenge to achieve even a modicum of length in their bodies.

I've heard students shout: "Deb, look, look" when they deeply surrender to a posture for the first time, when they notice their increased flexibility or a new-found strength. Their joy is contagious; their sense of accomplishment and pride tempered by the humility of the process. That's yoga.
